About US

Pat Jones

Pat’s professional career spans over fifty years, and includes a rare melding of expertise and experience in mathematics scholarship, in teaching mathematics at many levels, and in writing mathematics for a variety of audiences.
     
The extraordinary breadth of Pat’s accomplishments, and her unique qualifications for developing a comprehensive mathematics program for K-12 teachers and students, are summarized in the outline below.

    • High school math/science teacher (15 years)
    • University of Louisiana-Lafayette Mathematics Department (21 years)
    • Ten research papers in refereed mathematics journals
    • Member of Writing Team for A Call for Change: Recommendations on the Mathematical Preparation of Teachers; Mathematical Association of America (MAA)
    • Member of MAA Committee on the Mathematical Education of Teachers (Comet) for several terms
    • Numerous presentations at national, regional, and state professional meetings (many invited)
    • MAA (LA-MS Section) Award for Distinguished Teaching of University Mathematics
    • First recipient of ULL Foundation Outstanding Teacher Award
    • Principal Investigator for 10 LaSIP (Louisiana SSI Program) and LaCEPT grants (Louisiana CEPT Project)
    • Consultant and Presenter for 7 additional LaSIP and LaCEPT grants
    • Member of numerous state committees on mathematics education
    • Chair of ULL Mathematics Department Committee on Programs for Teachers (20 years)
    • Developed, taught, and wrote textbooks for mathematics courses for prospective elementary, middle school, and secondary teachers
    • Co-author of A Mathematical Foundation for Elementary Teachers (Addison Wesley)
    • Director of Louisiana Department of Education Region IV Curriculum Project
    • Presenter of statewide “Big Picture” seminars (LaSIP)
    • Author of “Core of K-8 Mathematics” (published by Louisiana Department of Education and LaSIP)
    • Developed DEEP in Mathematics program; authored materials (6 textbooks) and was lead presenter for three 6-week sessions of DEEP Leadership Academy (originally funded by LaSIP and subsequently by consortia of school districts)
    • Presented substantial professional development programs (15 days or more) for teachers in 6 school districts
    • Authored DeepMath student textbooks, and professional development textbooks, for grades 4 through 9

Cat McKay

Cat McKay has been involved in various aspects of mathematics education for over thirty years. She has an MEd with a major in mathematics, and more than 30 hours of additional graduate credit. She taught high school mathematics for many years, and is currently a member of the mathematics faculty at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

For over a decade, Cat’s considerable energy and expertise have been focused on helping preservice and inservice teachers acquire a deep, connected understanding of the standards-based mathematics that they are expected to teach. She has presented literally thousands of hours of content-centered professional development for teachers of all grade-levels. This has included serving as Principle Investigator and/or staff member for numerous grants and projects supported by the Louisiana Department of Education (LDE) and the Louisiana Systemic Initiative Project (LaSIP). In particular, Cat was among the original group who developed and presented the Deep into Mathematics Leadership Program for LaSIP and LDE; she was involved in multi-week institutes for teachers (funded by NSF, LDE, and/or LaSIP) every summer for the past ten years; she has presented substantial mathematics inservice programs for scores of school districts and her university teaching concentrates primarily on mathematics courses for elementary teachers.

Cat’s long-term leadership in state professional organizations is well-documented by the various offices she has held in LCSM, LATM, and ACTM. She is the CEO of CHARISM,CPR,LLC, and perhaps most importantly, she is known and respected throughout Louisiana as “the person to call” for information or help in planning and implementing programs to improve student performance in mathematics.
